Vocabulary Games to use with the vocabulary words on Page 6.
A. Pass
Word Game modified for ESL Class
1. Divide class into 2 teams
2. One member from each team sits in chairs facing the blackboard
3. Teacher shows pass word to class
4. The object is for the two students facing the blackboard to
guess the word from one-word clues/hints which they get from their team
members.
5. Go around class and a
member from Team A gives a one word clue/hint to help his representative
guess the word.
If the latter can't guess
the word, a member from Team B gives another hint/clue and his representative (rep.) tries to guess.
(5. Alternative: Go around
circle and have every team member give a clue before their rep.
begins guessing.
If he can't guess it goes to
the other side, Team B, to try and guess.
If the Team B rep. can't guess all his team members give a
hint/clue.
Each guesser gets two tries
at a word.)
6. The clock should be used and 15 seconds is the time
allotted for guessing
and for giving hint/clues.
7. Each representative gets 2 - 4 words to try to guess. Alternate between the two for person to
guess first.
After the 2 -4 words each,
these representatives join class team and two more come up.
8. Remind students to speak loud and clearly and to address the
person who should hear what they are saying.
9. Possible alternative:
hints can be two words. Especially for lower level ESL class.
10. The team that guesses a word scores a point - word and points
should go on blackboard.
The game goes till there are
no more words. The team with the most
points wins.
B. HOT SEAT
1. Divide class into two teams.
2. One member from each teams sits in a chair ('hot seat') in
front of the class, facing the class.
3. The team members move their chairs to a semi-circle around
their student, facing the student.
4. The teacher either writes on the blackboard behind the student
a vocabulary word, or shows the students a card with a word.
5. The two students facing the teams cannot see the word.
6. The team members must give the person in the chair hints,
one-word hints, to help him/her guess the word.
7. The hints must not use any part of the word.
8. When the person guesses the word, the team members throw their
arms up.
9. Teacher puts a point on the board for that team. (Often the other team keeps going just to
have their student guess the answer.)
10. Students in the 'hot seat' are changed, either every word, or
every two or three words.
11. It's easy to forget to change the person in the 'hot seat',
especially when they get to one student who is very good at guessing.
Change the students!!
C. Charades
is excellent fun and game that is always very successful
with students. Choose the words that
your students can act out.
Write each word on a card
and hand out cards to the students. The
students should not show their card to
anyone.
Each student comes to the
front of the class to try to get the class to guess the word on his card. He can not speak nor utter any sounds.
He uses hand gestures and
other body language to elicit the answer
from the class. Students are shy at
first, but after a while they all "get into it".
D. Concentration is a fun game but requires a lot of preparation,
i.e. making vocabulary cards.
Students should get into
groups of between 3 and 6 students.
Each group needs their own
set of mixed up cards; and each set contains two cards of each word.
The cards are all laid out
on the floor or a big table, face down, and students take turns picking two
cards.
If they get a match, they
keep them. If not, they return the cards to the table or floor.
The student with the most
cards at the end wins.
